Her work as a professional artist and a self-proclaimed obsession with all things artsy make Dianna Fritzler the queen of Grand Junction's cultural scene. After a bit of world travel and forays into the world of public relations, she finally dropped out of the rat race to pursue more creative dreams of being a painter. She's never looked back, and never tires of talking about the area's thriving arts.  Read full profile

Didn't mean to leave you hangin' with my last blog, but quite simply if I put all of this into one blog you would have gone cross-eyed!

Here's the continuation of the fantastic fall festivals coming up this weekend (Sept. 18 & 19).

Chautauqua

Ok, first of all, what the heck is a chautauqua?! This is the definition I've been given:  "A Chautauqua brings history to life through an event where a professional scholar/actor performs a spirited portrayal of a famous historical figure, complete with constume and mannerisms from the period." Hey - that makes sense to me!

Now that I know what a Chautauqua is, I've found that this year's event is going to be very cool. (I know, I know, I date myself with the "cool" thing.) A few of the historical "characters" that will be portrayed are Coco Chanel, P.T. Barnum, Babe Ruth and Irene Castle.

In addition, on Thursday, Sept. 17, 6 - 9:30 p.m. there is a Kick-off Dance, "Dancing Through the Decades," with Live music from the Men of Music, a 10-piece big band orchestra. Then, on Saturday and Sunday there are presentations and performances throughout the day.

Here's the kicker. Tickets are only $10 for an entire family or $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2.50 for kids 3-12. It's all held at Cross Orchards (a living history park/facility). For MUCH more information, go to www.TwoRiversChautauqua.com. This grand event is brought to GJ by the Museum of Western Colorado and the Two Rivers Chautauqua Committee.

Pork & Hops Challenge

Switching gears completely is the Grand Junction Pork & Hops Challenge. This popular event seems to grow each year -- bigger and better.  This year the Professional Kansas City BBQ Society has assembled 48 teams to compete by preparing THE best chicken, pork, brisket (and more) barbeque that you have ever put in your mouth!

And what would BBQ be without ice cold beer?! So Budweiser along with more than a dozen microbrews will have the suds on hand. By the way, Budweiser is the sponsor of the event. (So it's GOT to be good, right?)

There's also activities for the kids and eight great bands will perform throughout the event.

Tickets for this family-friendly event are $30 for a two-day pass for adults. Children under 12 are free!  And if you want to go and have a few extra perks, buy the 2-Day VIP Pass for $145. For lots more info, go to www.porknhops.com.

Now, I'm finally done with briefing you on this weekend's festivals. Now it's time to PLAY!  So, come and enjoy the great fall festivals in the valley.  You'll be glad you did!
