The first year was a great success. The second year promises to be a downright knee-slappin', toe-tappin', hip-swayin' grand time! The
Palisade Bluegrass and Roots Music Festival arrives at Riverbend Park in Palisade on June 11 and runs through June 13. And there's quite a buzz in town about it.
Appearing during the three days are such nationally noted bands as Hot Buttered Rum, Asleep at the Wheel and Missed the Boat, who was nominated for four 2010 Grammy awards. Hugely popular area bands, including Stray Grass and Sweet Sunny South, will also heat up the stage. And this year bands will double their playing time from 45 to 90 minutes each, giving concertgoers plenty of time to "get in the groove."
The laid-back atmosphere of the festival is only enhanced by the gorgeous scenery. Huge trees shade festivalgoers while the Colorado River meanders past the stage. A disc-golf course spots the 110-acre park for those who want to stretch their legs (and arm). And local wines and brews (of which there are many) will be for sale to wet the whistle, along with great goodies from vendors, including jewelry, art and food.
Visitors also have the opportunity to learn more about the musicians and instruments at the Family Tent, where music workshops will be held. Musical workshops are also offered throughout the event, and jam sessions just seem to pop up everywhere. There's even a play area for kids.
For those who want to take in more of the outdoors and camp out during the festival, the campground area has been expanded to 60 acres complete with five large communal fire rings where the spontaneous jam sessions and socializing can continue.
A quick shuttle ride into the town of Palisade (probably all of 5 minutes) brings visitors to the Town Plaza. Musical groups will be playing throughout the small town, and restaurants and art galleries will welcome all with great art, antiques, food and air conditioning!
If you'd rather take a bike ride, head on over to Rapid Creek Cycles on Main and rent a cruiser to ride through town, to the wineries, along the trail by the Colorado River and on. OK - I'm getting a little pumped up already!
Ticket prices start at $25 and go up according to how many days you want to attend and whether you want a camping pass. Kids under 12 are free! For more information, go to

It really is a ton of fun, and the music, scenery and people-watching are unbeatable. Come jam with us!
Oh - and mark your calendars now for a summer of music in the Grand Valley. There's Country Jam June 24 - 27, Rock Jam August 27 & 28, Jazz Among the Grapevines starting June 15, the Colorado Riverfront Concert Series throughout the summer, and The Western Colorado Botanic Gardens Summer Concerts Series, which starts June 18. I'll write more about these later, as I'm sure you need to stop reading and order your tickets NOW!
