Snow falls early, piles up deep and lingers long atop Colorado's Grand Mesa at more than 10,000 feet above sea level. Three networks of cross-country ski trails crown this enormous, flat-topped mountain outside of Grand Junction. Skyway and Country Line trails are interconnected. Ward Creek, on the south side of the Mesa, is the most extensive system. Volunteers print a Nordic map and maintain the trails, which offer free access, although donations are welcome. The West Bench Trail and Old Mesa Road are marked but ungroomed winter routes.
