Rafting down the river
Rafting down the river
Grand Junction is a jumping-off point for four-season explorations of Colorado's mountains, canyons and the mighty Colorado River. Popular activities include hiking and rafting in summer, snowmobiling in winter and bicycling through much of the year.

The Colorado National Monument is a scenic symphony of spires, cliffs and rock formations flanking a deep canyon carved by the Colorado River. For some groups, a scenic drive is just the ticket, but for those looking for more adventure, the Monument is but one of western Colorado's awesome landscapes.

Colorado Alpine & Desert Adventures guides hikes in the Monument and other public lands, and for unsurpassed team building, offers beginning lessons in rock climbing. Western Colorado is also cycling central. Road-cycling enthusiasts love the Monument's 23-mile Rim Rock Road for a real workout, while mountain bikers ride on other

public lands. In fact, nearby Fruita is a mountain-biking Mecca. Brown Cycles in downtown Grand Junction has a great bike rental fleet and can direct visitors to suitable trails.

Adventure Bound's mild to wild raft trips of various lengths include private charters for groups. A great one-day option is a gentle float trip through the gorgeous Colorado River's Ruby Canyon or Horsethief Canyon located at the Colorado-Utah border.

For groups wanting a calmer water experience, the best bet is The High Lonesome Ranch in DeBeque. This fishing resort offers private waters, fly-fishing instruction, guided fly fishing and even a small conference room for meetings.

Grand Junction's winter playground is the Grand Mesa, the world's largest flat-top mountain rising to more than 10,000 feet above sea level. Grand Mesa Lodge offers guided snowmobile tours

for small groups. A guide leads up to nine sleds through snow-laden forests to scenic overlooks. The Grand Mesa Nordic Council grooms three free cross-country and snowshoeing trail systems atop the Mesa for winter sports lovers.

Of the public courses near Grand Junction, The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa is the newest and most spectacular with 11 elevated tees and views that won't quit. Tee times can normally be reserved seven days in advance, but the club's Golf & Stay arrangements with area hotels makes farther-out booking available to groups. The Red Canyon Grill in the clubhouse can cater a lunch or reception in the members' room.

Absolute Prestige Limousine's fleet of limos, vans, stretch limos and a 27-passenger bus transports groups on a route of their choosing, including one of their popular wine tours. The company will make desired arrangements for winery visits and perhaps a picnic, dinner or reception, and get attendees there and back in luxury and style.
