My idea of heaven? Spread out a blanket under the stars, put a glass of chilled, well, anything in my hand, and start the music. That's why I'm so delighted to find that Grand Junction sizzles with live music in summer.

You can take in a concert among the vines, a symphony in the park, or just groove to the live tunes along Main Street during special events. It all perfectly caps off a day spent pursuing other Grand Valley summer fun: hiking, river rafting, golfing, or wine touring.

The entertainment is free or moderately priced and takes place in unique outdoor settings. With a little planning, you can find the perfect entertainment in a venue to match.

Pick your venue, and your entertainment
Among the vines: Surrounded by a curtain of lush grapevines at Grande River Vineyards, you'll drink in views of Mount Garfield while at Hear it Through the Grapevine concerts (May into August, check website for schedule, ticket prices); offerings vary from Cajun to Latin. At Two Rivers Winery, just kick back on the grass, gaze at the sandstone cliffs rising beyond the French chateau-style winery, and snap your fingers to the laid-back Jazz Among the Grapevines (June-August, check website for schedule, ticket prices).

Near the Colorado River: Walk past the blooms in the native plant gardens, and you'll find the cozy amphitheater at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens' Summer Music at the Gardens (May-September, check website
for schedule; $5). On various Wednesday or Friday nights each month, you can listen to anything from blues to rock to folk—or heck, whatever's cool.

Downtown: Lincoln Park serves up grand symphony within sight of the Grand Mesa at the Evening under the Stars, featuring the Grand Junction Symphony, the Centennial Band, and other local groups (third Saturday in August, free). Just stroll down Main Street to catch the First Friday Art Hop each month (April-November) or every Thursday night's Downtown Farmer's Market(June-September); at each event you'll be treated to all kinds of free live entertainment, from belly dancers to drummers. Time it right and you'll hit May's big Art and Jazz Festival that takes over Main Street (check website for schedule).

And don't forget the outdoor music elsewhere in the Grand Valley: splashy festivals like the Palisade Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival (mid-June), Palisades' Peach Fest (third weekend in August), Rock Jam (at the end of August) and the Colorado Wine Festival (third weekend in September),

So grab your picnic basket, a blanket or a couple of lawn chairs, and get ready for a little bit of heaven.

If you go:
Rules vary, so check ahead. In general, it's okay to bring a picnic to these events, but where beer and wine are allowed, it must be purchased on site.
