High Country Orchards is quickly gaining a reputation for producing the best peaches in the best peach-growing region in the country. In 2009, the well-known Palisade orchard enjoyed a visit from the Obama family. The president’s wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia, toured High Country Orchards on their Western vacation.
The Obamas picked peaches and were treated to a peach recipe demonstration. By all accounts, High Country Orchards owners said they had a great time on the farm and enjoyed Palisade Peaches as they flew on Air Force One to their next stop, the Grand Canyon.
To take your own tour, brave devilish 90-degree turns on East Orchard Mesa and head to High Country Orchards.
Each season brings new developments at the orchard and they now have an attractive farm market building, a state-of-the-art packing and sorting shed, tour carts and an extensive garden.
The addition of a commercial kitchen designed for production canning allows the orchard to produce thousands of jars of Peach Salsa, all from produce grown on the property. A quick tour of High Country Orchards reveals stacks of tomato bins, buckets filled with peppers and crates of peaches in a large cooler.
For a real treat, try the orchard’s Peach Jalapeno Jam. The bright peach jam flecked with green and red jalapenos is great on crackers with brie cheese and offers a nice balance of sweet peaches and warm jalapenos.
