Enjoy the Fourth of July in Grand Junction, Picture

Long before Colorado National Monument became one of the Grand Junction area's most iconic landmarks, a determined visionary named John Otto championed its protection. Widely recognized as the driving force behind the Monument's creation, Otto spent years promoting the area's dramatic canyons, monoliths, and desert landscapes. After President William Howard Taft designated Colorado National Monument in 1911, Otto established a tradition that continues more than a century later. That same year, he forged a climbing route up the 450-foot-tall Independence Monument, and on July 4, 1911, became the first person to summit the towering rock formation and plant an American flag at its peak. Otto repeated the climb every Independence Day for many years, creating one of Colorado's most unique patriotic traditions.

Today, members of the Mesa County Search & Rescue team honor Otto's legacy by making the challenging climb to the summit of Independence Monument each Fourth of July. Before dawn, climbers ascend the sheer sandstone tower carrying a large American flag, which is raised at the top in a ceremony that can be viewed from the Monument Canyon area below. The flag remains in place throughout the holiday weekend, serving as a visible tribute to Otto's vision, the nation's independence, and the enduring spirit of adventure that defines the Grand Junction area. Following the holiday, National Park Service staff remove the flag until it is raised again the following year, continuing a tradition that has inspired residents and visitors for generations. Learn more about this tradition here.

Friendly reminders: Fireworks are always prohibited in Colorado National Monument, stay away from cliff edges, always pack plenty of water and snacks, and apply sunscreen. On extra hot days, consider a portable shade tarp in case you need a rest from the sun's rays.

Grand Junction’s Main Street will be closed from 1st Street to 9th Street as Downtown becomes extra celebratory with colorful floats, live performances, and patriotic music. Downtown has plenty of shade from the tree canopy and the wide pedestrian-friendly sidewalks provide room for everyone to enjoy the parade. Plan to stroll through Downtown Grand Junction after the parade and experience 115 sculptures and murals that frame the sidewalks. Downtown is all local with no franchises, so enjoy the boutique shops, independent cafes, and privately-owned restaurants.

Since Lincoln Park is right next to the stadium, fireworks will be exploding directly overhead. All you have to do is lean back, relax, and shout out oohs and ahhs!
