Independence Day Weekend Celebrations & Events
Protect the Falcons and Honor our History
Most years on Independence Day, Colorado National Monument issues a permit for a climb up Independence Monument, which is steeped in history. Mesa County Technical Search and Rescue Team climbs with locals to raise Old Glory to the top of the famous towering monolith. Due to nesting peregrine falcons, the climb has been cancelled for this year. Instead, Park Rangers will be at Independence Monument View from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, with activities for kids and adults! Rangers will chat with guests about John Otto's historic climb, peregrine falcons, and the history of Colorado National Monument. Education about the important balance of recreation and preservation, and general climbing safety knowledge, will be shared as well.
John Otto was responsible for sparking interest in the formal designation of Colorado National Monument. When President Taft formalized the land as a national monument in 1911, Otto set to work, creating a way to celebrate the Monument and the country. He worked tirelessly, creating a climbing route up the 450-foot stone tower in the middle of Monument Canyon. On July 4, 1911, Otto summited Independence Monument for the first time and planted an American Flag at the top. He continued to climb Independence Monument every year on the 4th of July to plant the flag. Learn more about this tradition here.
Friendly reminders: Fireworks are always prohibited in Colorado National Monument, stay away from cliff edges, always pack plenty of water and snacks, and apply sunscreen.
Downtown July 4th Parade on Main Street (10 AM Start)
Also happening on the 4th is the Downtown 4th of July Parade! Plan to stroll through Downtown Grand Junction after the parade and experience 115 sculptures and murals that frame the sidewalks. Downtown is all local with no franchises, so enjoy the boutique shops, independent cafes, and privately-owned restaurants.

Once the sun goes down, the sky over the stadium lights up with a dazzling display of fireworks.
