Grand Junction’s high desert climate extends the summer season longer than other areas in Colorado and the U.S. So, you have plenty of time to stretch the season and get one last summer adventure on the books. Days remain long, with sunsets typically starting around 7:50 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in late-August, and the best part is that it doesn’t get too cold, reaching comfortable temps around the mid-80s through 9:00 p.m. So, you have plenty of time to enjoy an extra adventure on your getaway.

Sunset over Rattlesnake Arches

One of the most popular adventures for those who prefer to spend time outdoors is exploring Nature’s Trifecta. It is the only place in the world where three unique natural landscapes converge in such striking contrast. Colorado National Monument, known as the “mini-Grand Canyon;” the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-top mountain; and Rattlesnake Arches, the second largest concentration of arches in the world. You can explore all three in one trip, since they are only a 10-, 45-, and 75-minute drive from Downtown Grand Junction. Please note that there are two ways to access Rattlesnake Arches, for more information, use this detailed guide to easily arrive at Rattlesnake Arches.

Colorado National Monument

As the sun begins to set, take a quick drive over to Colorado National Monument (CNM) for vibrant red rocks, soaring spires, and radiant hues. The sun cascades down the sandstone, creating the perfect backdrop for golden hour pictures or simply enjoying the evening’s cool breeze.

Rim Rock Drive

Enjoy the tranquility after a tasty meal while you “hike from your car” on Rim Rock Drive, surrounded by towering rock formations illuminated in glowing sun rays. Have your cameras ready because the CNM is painted in vibrant colors from end to end. When you least expect it, bighorn sheep may appear as you turn the corner, so drive slow. There are plenty of parking lots and overlooks just a couple of steps from your parked car, so you can “ooh” and “awe” as panoramic vistas appear at every stop.

Sunset Hike

If you prefer to hike on foot, there are plenty of short trails to bask in the golden light. Serpent’s Trail, 3.8 miles, is a moderate out-and-back hike that winds you along what was previously known as the “crookedest road in the world.” If you’re looking for a quick but stunning trail, take the Coke Ovens Overlook trail, which is about 1 mile round-trip and still rewards you with breathtaking views of the Coke Ovens rock formation as the sun descends behind the canyon walls.

Stargazing

If you stick around for a little bit longer, you’ll be able to see the stars peep out and begin to light up the sky. Highland View Overlook is a great spot to set up camp, with a warm blanket and your favorite soda, you’ll be able to spot the entire Milky Way from one of the highest points in the CNM. If you’re looking to stay a little closer to the entrances, Cold Shivers Point is only about a 5-minute drive into the CNM and offers you a large view of the night sky just off of Rim Rock Drive.
