3 Minute Read

Baseball has a way of bringing people together, turning strangers into fans united by the same cheer. In Grand Junction, that shared energy builds from sunlit afternoons—where the crack of a bat can ignite the crowd—to electric evenings under stadium lights, when every pitch carries weight. This isn’t just nostalgia for America’s favorite pastime; it’s a living tradition. Each year, some of the nation’s top young athletes take the field here, competing for a national title at the Junior College World Series (JUCO), proving that Grand Junction’s passion for the game runs deep.

Welcome to JUCO

Every year, for 68 years, the Junior College Baseball World Series (JUCO) has championed elite baseball, and Grand Junction has hosted JUCO since 1959. Athletes from all over the country gather during the last week in May for this week-long tournament. JUCO is held at Suplizio Field, which is only a few minutes from I-70 and Downtown Grand Junction.

Thousands of fans gather to watch the nation’s best junior college athletes faceoff against pitchers who often throw in the range of 80 – 96 mph. Suplizio Field holds about 7,000 people, providing an intimate sporting experience — there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Load up with refreshing drinks, snacks, hot dogs, or a bite from one of the many local food trucks that attend the tournament.

JUCO Player Signing A Baseball

The Junior College Baseball World Series is more than just a tournament, and the players are competing for more than just a trophy. It’s a stage for athletes who have earned the right to walk out on this field to display their athleticism after hundreds of hours of practice and regional games. Every pitch, catch and swing is critical as teams battle to advance in the tournament, and more importantly, prove they have what it takes to make it in the big leagues – because it’s not just fans who are watching. Major League Baseball scouts are scoping future big league athletes. They’re observing players, taking notes and measuring pitching speeds. This extra pressure makes the games even more exciting!

Welcome to JUCO

Ticket prices start as low as $6.00 for kids (12 years and under) and $10.00 for adults per game or $35.00 for a tournament pass that includes all the games. Children three and under are free! Round up your friends and family and spend some quality time at the ball field. After the sun goes down on the last night, JUCO celebrates with a fireworks show, so be sure to stick around and celebrate with the champions!

The Junior College Baseball World Series is one of Grand Junction’s most beloved traditions. Its history is filled with stories of triumph and overcoming the odds. It is common for JUCO athletes to get picked up by Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. For example, in 2022, Bowden Francis from Chipola College, FL was picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays. In 2025, Drew Somers from Central Arizona College was picked up by the Detroit Tigers, and Jacob Misiorowski from Crowder College was picked up by the Milwaukee Brewers. Before becoming an MLB star, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper played in this very tournament. Other MLB athletes whose past included the JUCO World Series can be found here.

JUCO Banquet

The annual JUCO Banquet welcomes fans to the kick-off dinner where coaches are recognized and new inductees are honored in the JUCO Hall of Fame. The Banquet will feature a powerful keynote from Karl “Gus” Gustavson, a recently retired Navy SEAL and Grand Junction High School graduate whose story reflects resilience, teamwork, and service. Held May 22, 2026, at the Grand Junction Convention Center, the banquet brings together the 10 qualifying teams ahead of tournament play, setting the tone for the competition. Gustavson, who grew up attending JUCO games, went on to a 22-year military career that included service with SEAL Team 6 and multiple combat deployments, earning numerous commendations for valor. Now retired and serving as Director of Operations for Community First Project, Gus continues to lead and train others. Open to the public, the banquet offers a meaningful kickoff to the tournament, connecting the spirit of the game with a message of dedication and perseverance.

Buy your tickets and join us for some baseball and Cracker Jacks! The last week in May will be here before you know it!
