The Colorado River
The Colorado River plays a defining role in shaping both the landscape and identity of Grand Junction. The city’s name reflects its origins at the historic “junction” of the Grand River—renamed the Colorado River in 1921—and the Gunnison River. This confluence helped establish Grand Junction as a hub for agriculture, transportation, and early settlement, and continues to influence the region today.
Beyond its historical significance, the Colorado River serves as a central recreational corridor for visitors and locals. Flowing directly through the Grand Junction area, the river offers a range of accessible outdoor experiences, from leisurely tubing and stand-up paddleboarding to kayaking and guided rafting trips. Sections of the river provide calm, scenic floats ideal for families, while nearby stretches offer more dynamic water suitable for those seeking a bit more adventure.
