4 Minute Read
In 2026, two historic milestones converge. The United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, known as the U.S. Semiquincentennial. While Colorado celebrates 150 years of statehood, known as Colorado’s Sesquicentennial.
Combined, the two anniversaries have been coined the Sesquisemiquincentennial! These anniversaries offer a rare opportunity to reflect on our nation’s founding, recognize Colorado’s journey as the Centennial State, and honor the communities that continue shaping both stories today. From national initiatives to statewide celebrations and local events here in Grand Junction, 2026 is a year of reflection, pride, and forward-looking momentum.
America 250
On July 4, 1776, a bold idea was set into motion. In a room filled with debate, risk, and resolve, fifty-six delegates representing the thirteen colonies, signed a document that would forever change the course of history — the Declaration of Independence. Their signatures marked the birth of a new nation and launched a story still unfolding 250 years later.
In 2026, the nation commemorates the Semiquincentennial — America’s 250th anniversary. This milestone invites reflection on our shared history, recognition of the leaders who shaped it, and renewed commitment to the future.
In 2016, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established, launching a decade of planning for the “America 250” celebration in 2026. The result is a year filled with events honoring the nation’s history, recognizing significant landmarks, and creating meaningful experiences for communities across the country. There are many ways to get involved on the national level!

Colorado 150
On August 1, 1876, Colorado became the 38th state, earning the nickname “The Centennial State” because statehood occurred during the nation’s centennial year. Colorado was the only state admitted to the Union in 1876. In 2026, the U.S. commemorates its 250th anniversary, and Colorado marks 150 years of statehood, creating a rare opportunity to celebrate both milestones in the same year. Colorado is launching a variety of initiatives, including:
-
Colorado 150 License Plate: You can now purchase two Colorado-150-themed license plates inspired by the art of two young Colorado citizens.
-

Whether you’re exploring Colorado’s landscapes, showing your state pride, enjoying a historical performance, or joining in one of the many events planned for 2026, opportunities to engage can be found across the Centennial State. In western Colorado, Grand Junction adds its own chapter to the celebrations.
Grand Junction
Founded in 1882 by George A. Crawford, who served as the town’s first president, Grand Junction’s name was named for its location at the confluence of two major rivers, the Colorado and the Gunnison, which converge in the heart of the community.
Originally, the river flowing through western Colorado was called the Grand River. In 1921, the Colorado Legislature passed a resolution renaming the Grand River to the Colorado River to unify the river’s name from its headwaters in Rocky Mountain National Park.
In 2026, Grand Junction is participating in both the U.S. and Colorado’s anniversaries, adding a distinctly local perspective. Throughout the year, community partners, cultural organizations, and local venues will host events, performances, commemorations, and family-friendly experiences that honor the region’s history. From heritage programming and educational exhibits to signature events and community gatherings, Grand Junction offers meaningful ways to engage, reflect, and celebrate. Here are just a few in the works:

The Blue Angels are one of the most iconic military flight demonstration teams in the world, known for precision aerial routines in F/A-18 aircraft and high-energy performances. Additional flying acts, interactive displays, and aviation-related activities are expected throughout the weekend, providing a multifaceted experience for everyone. As the nation marks 250 years, the sight of the Blue Angels soaring above Grand Junction serves as a striking reminder of dedication, courage, and the ideals that continue to shape the country.
