Settle into mindful practices surrounded by the red-rock canyons of Colorado National Monument (CNM). Book Cliffs View is a local favorite, inviting quiet reflection overlooking the canyons and sandstone spires. It’s especially stunning at sunset or sunrise, where sun rays bounce off the rocks, bathing you in the golden glow. Another backdrop for respite in CNM, after a short, easy 1.2-mile hike, is the Devil’s Kitchen Trail, where you’ll be steered to the kitchen. The namesake is a rock formation that surrounds you and reveals the perfect spot to sit, breathe fresh air, and enjoy some me-time. For a longer descent into the canyons, Wedding Canyon Trail is 11.9 miles and is a difficult route with 1,843 ft in elevation gain; however, the rewarding views and wildlife sightings, including bighorn sheep, help bring your mind at ease with each step.

Sunset over Connected Lakes

If you’re looking for something different, just 10 minutes from Downtown, you can soak in the fresh air on a picnic table or enjoy a refreshing walk around the lakes. James M. Robb Colorado River State Park – Connected Lakes section features calm waters that mirror the surrounding trees, and in the winter, frosty snow dustings cover the ground. Take a leisurely stroll in the comfortable temperatures, typically averaging highs of 38 degrees Fahrenheit in January and 45 degrees Fahrenheit in February, or pause and focus on the view from one of the tables as you disconnect and journal or sketch.

Let the gentle rhythm of birdsong accompany your steps underneath tree canopies along the Colorado Riverfront Trail. The Audubon Section of the trail is alive with birds chirping throughout the entire stroll. This 5.7-mile paved out-and-back trail leads to benches and picnic areas where you can rest and enjoy a snack while the water in the Colorado River flows beside you. You may see other wildlife, including rabbits, as well as fish that jump out of the 5 lakes along the trail. Just under half a mile into the trail, the “Owl Tree” becomes a seasonal highlight, where springtime hikers may spot fluffy owlets peeking from their nest.

With 1.75 miles of natural dirt trails, this wildlife-focused reserve offers beautiful birds singing, big sky views and uninterrupted vistas of Colorado National Monument, the Book Cliffs, and the Grand Mesa. Dogs are welcome to join you on your adventure as long as they are leashed.

Pen, Paper, Peace

For an indoor journaling session, stop by one of Grand Junction’s local coffee shops and let your thoughts unfold. Copeka Coffee is a retro-chic café that regularly hosts creative events, so you can lean into an artsy session for inspiration. Their Shakerato, an espresso shaken with house-made syrup, or the Temple of Doom, an espresso cream soda with vanilla and grenadine, will help focus your thoughts and get your pen moving! Downtown, Kiln Coffee Bar hosts a steady hum of conversation and the smell of roasted beans fills the air to create a productive, comforting atmosphere. It’s common to find others journaling, sketching, or writing alongside you, fueled by cappuccinos, mochas, or sips like matcha, kombucha, and tea lattes. For peak coziness, head to the Downtown Cat, a cat café where purring companions curl up nearby and turn your journaling session into a moment of pure delight. You can snag a freshly brewed coffee, soda, or small bites like a cake pop, pastry, or the cinnamon coffee cake to channel your thoughts. We are warning you, the kitten cuteness is likely to be a delightful distraction as the furballs cozy up in your lap.

Woman Sitting in Colorado National Monument

If you’re looking for somewhere more scenic to bring your pen to paper, Grand Junction offers strikingly different vistas to inspire every mood. In Colorado National Monument, you can drive along Rim Rock Drive to one of 19 pullouts and overlooks to see why it is called the “mini-Grand Canyon.” On each overlook, the sun-kissed sandstone naturally invites you to slow your thoughts and be present in the moment. For a softer backdrop, the Colorado River’s calm waters flow gently below you at Las Colonias Park. You can walk along the river on a paved path and stop along the shoreline to pause and sketch as cottonwoods frame the riverbanks and the quiet ripple of the river settles in around you.
