While Labor Day marks the unofficial end of the summer, it does not mean that there isn’t fun to be had in Grand Junction. Now is the perfect time to discover something new and make memories before the kiddos hit the books. Whether you seek an adventurous vacation or desire to spend quality time with your friends and family, Grand Junction has an exciting lineup of relaxing, exhilarating and memorable activities for Labor Day weekend.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Days are cooling off, providing comfortable temperatures to explore Nature's Trifecta; and Grand Junction is the only place in the world where you can discover this trio of natural landscapes. Nature's Trifecta is a unique combination of three contrasting and magnificent geological features. This trilogy includes the Colorado National Monument, the Grand Mesa, and Rattlesnakes Arches. With hundreds of trails to hike and bike, it deserves a spot on your list of things to do on Labor Day in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Cruise along the 23-mile scenic Rim Rock Drive to the top of the Colorado National Monument. Don't forget to stop at the Upper Ute Canyon View, head to the left of the 'mummy' and scream "cowabunga" at the top of your lungs. The experience might end up being the most unexpected highlight of your summer.
Grand Mesa, the world's largest flat-top mountain with over 300 lakes, is a sportsman’s paradise. If you’re looking to wander among the pines, take the easy 3-mile roundtrip Mesa Lakes Shoreline Trail for gorgeous views of Mesa Lake's shimmering crystal clear alpine waters. If you’re seeking a challenge and some elevation change, explore one of the longest trails on the Grand Mesa. The 11.3-mile Crag Crest National Recreation Trail takes you past glistening lakes and enchanting lush forest. If that's not enough for a day full of fun, there's plenty of places to fish, horseback ride, mountain bike, and hike too!
Completing the Trifecta is the awe-inspiring Rattlesnakes Arches, located just 20 miles from Grand Junction and home to 35 natural arches carved over millions of years. Trek the 15.5-mile roundtrip hike called Pollock Bench Trailhead via Fruita, which will lead you through the spectacular canyons of this area. If you’re looking for a less strenuous route, enter through Glade Park but be aware that this option requires a 4-wheel drive and high-clearance vehicle. After the drive, you will be rewarded with a short 4-mile hike around the arches. You can also book a guided tour with Adrenaline Driven Adventure Rentals & Tours or Grand Junction Adventures, which is highly recommended.
Splish and a Big SPLASH
Before summer passes you by, make time to leisurely float down the Colorado River on a raft, tube, or stand-up paddle board (SUP). This calm section of the river flows right through town and is one of the best things to do over the Labor Day weekend. Head to Las Colonias Park along the Colorado River, voted one of the best spots for river tubing in the country by Smithsonian Magazine, for a laid-back and relaxing experience. The Colorado River along this section is slower during this time of the year, making it a perfect place to wade in and cool off.

Adults can try stand-up paddleboarding at the Butterfly Pond in the park. James M. Robb Colorado River State Park and Grand Mesa are also excellent destinations if SUP is on your Labor Day list. If you are looking for adrenaline and adventure, try rafting the Westwater Canyon section of the Colorado River. The 17+ mile stretch is known for its Class 3 and Class 4 rapids during peak rafting season. It is much calmer during late summer and is a must-do for the stunning red rock scenery. Grand Junction features an array of water sports for those looking for a late summer soak. Always wear your personal flotation device – safety first!
